Just so GoodReads reviewers know I'm not exaggerating, this is exactly what is included for each: Name, Birth/Death Dates, Nationality, a 1-2 sentence introduction, and a one sentence quotation. I was really disappointed with how little information was shared about these 14 individuals. Representation matters and I will always champion getting more LGBTQ+ texts on shelves for school-aged readers. I strongly recommend!Ĭontent Warnings: aircraft crash, homophobia, illness, transphobiaĪs a gay educator, I spotted this on Goodreads months ago and lit up when I found a copy at my local bookstore in Thailand.
I wish it was longer because it's such a cute book!Īudience: Young kids! It'll be an easy read and great introduction to queer advocates and celebrating diversity. Readability: ★★★★★, Short and sweet, it would be a fun storytime to have a discussion about! I think young readers could easily flip through this by themselves as well, the visuals are stunning and very engaging!Įntertainment: ★★★★☆, Would have liked more background on the folks included, but I think it also works fine without. The people are often depicted happy and expressive, just giving a great sense of queer joy. There are queer people in the world, and they can do fun, wonderful, and positive things. This makes it a really great diversity icebreaker for young children, as the book isn't complex but offers a simple start of information.
You don't need to know everything about each figure, but you know they made a positive impact in the world- all while being LGBTQIA+. You don't learn much about the figures aside from names, dates, what they are known for, and a positive adjective associated with them, but I think it still works because of the idea of the book. This is an incredibly simple book but with a nice message. Content warnings are listed at the end of my review!
